The Atlanta Hawks: How can you take a team seriously that starts Jason Collins at Center?

Jason Collins: See - Useless.

How can you take a team seriously that starts Jason Collins at center?   Granted, when he does play he doesn’t play long.  He’s averaging 12 minutes per game on the year, but will undoubtedly see closer to 20 against Orlando to keep Al Horford off of Dwight Howard.  What is perplexing is why the Hawks use Collins at all.  They already have one of the best backup centers in the league (in my opinion) in Zaza Pachulia.  Pachulia averages 4.5 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game in 15 minutes of play.  That is nearly twice the production of Collins (2.0 points per game & 2.1 rebounds per game) in only 3 more minutes of play.

How colossally useless is Collins?  The only facet he brings to the game, besides six fouls, is the fact that he is an above average passer for a big man (supposedly) and that he has “a high basketball IQ” (again supposedly).  Then why does he average 0.5 assists per game and make few defensive plays of any merit whatsoever?  People that have closely followed basketball may be thinking at this point, “Weren’t there two Collins at one point?”  Indeed there were.  He had an equally useless twin brother named Jarron, whose best career season was when he averaged 6.0 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game in 21 minutes of play per night as a member of the Utah Jazz.  Don’t let those outstanding numbers deceive you into thinking he might have been an all star.  His career stats were 3.9 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game.  Comparing the two, they both have the same career scoring average (3.9) but Jason is the superior rebounder as he rips down over 4 a game for his career.

Back to the question at hand:  How can you take a team seriously that starts one of these Collins fellows?  Jason Collins is 33 and has proven he will never contribute much to a team on a given night, at all.  How bad is Dwight Howard going to abuse a player of that caliber?

[...] Just a few days after I write about what a horrible player he is, Collins records 1 point in 17 minu…, while also recording 6 fouls and fouling out.  Many of the fouls were ineffective ones at that, as Dwight Howard still scored.  There has to be better players in the D-League.  I think that’s a relative certainty.  Howard had the biggest game of his career due to Atlanta’s poor centers and Collins played his role in the horrible defense, perhaps even being the ring leader of the three headed failure monster that is the Hawks’ centers.
