Ken Griffey Jr.’s son to play football at Arizona

Ken Griffey Jr., in his time, was one of the best athletes in the game of baseball. His smooth swing, blazing speed, and outstanding defensive ability made Griff one of the most dangerous dual-threat players in the game.

Apparently the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

According to multiple reports, Griffey’s son, Trey Griffey, has signed on to play football for the Arizona Wildcats beginning with the 2012-2013 season. Trey Griffey has established his reputation as a wide receiver– although one who is only rated as a three-star prospect by most scouting services. During his senior season, Griffey posted respectable numbers at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, posting 72 catches for 970 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Griffey played both sides for his squad, also hauling in 11 interceptions for a team that finished 10-2. In spite of his status as a relatively minor prospect, Griffey’s outstanding performance at the recent Under Armour All-American game helped catch the eyes of several programs across the country, with Arizona getting his committment.

Regardless of whether Griffey had performed as well as he did during the Under Armour game, his name alone– and the genetic makeup it suggests– would have ensured that someone gave the 6’2″, 185 pound athlete a shot.

It’ll be interesting to see what impact Griffey has on an Arizona program that has always seemed to be a few steps short of truly competing in the Pac-12 Conference.
