Arizona State’s Sun Devil stadium has been around since 1958 and the years have started to take a toll on the old stadium. ASU has taken notice of this and has announced plans to renovate the stadium with major upgrades.

Above is an artist’s rendition of what the new Sun Devil stadium will look like once the whole project is completed within the next couple of years. The tentative updates will add a new shade canopy over the stadium to create a natural passage of light and air through the stadium. It will decrease the seating to a capacity of somewhere between 55 and 65,000 people but it will provide more leg room and more seats with a back to it. The new stadium will also feature a state-of-the-art sound system, video boards and scoreboards.

With the addition of the canopy it will allow the Sun Devils to play day games earlier in the season to accommodate Pac-12 Network obligations. It can get scorching hot in the desert earlier in the college football season so it is a smart move for their new stadium to include some sort of shade. The look of the canopy in between the two Buttes in Tempe provides a very futuristic look that will be something new recruits can appreciate.

They are starting a new era in Tempe after Dennis Erickson was fired and Todd Graham takes over starting next year. They had a decent season last year highlighted with upset victories over the Missouri Tigers and USC Trojans but faltered down the stretch. They lost their last five games of the season including their bowl game against Boise State.

Although the rendition looks similar to something you would see in Star Wars, it is still exciting for Sun Devils fans to see their program competing in the Pac-12 facilities arms race.
