This morning at 1:32 p.m. the NBA approved the 4-team blockbuster deal that sent Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers, Andre Iguodala to the Denver Nuggets and brought star center Andrew Bynum and veteran shooting guard, Jason Richardson, to the Philadelphia 76ers.

With this trade, the 76ers will be relinquishing first round draft pick Maurice “Moe” Harkless, Nic Vucevic, and Iguodala as well as a 2013 protected draft pick and we’ll be receiving Bynum. Even though fans can remember how Harkless just signed his rookie contract, he will be a good piece in a rebuilding Orlando Magic franchise.

More importantly, this is one of the more monumental trades involving the 76ers in recent history, especially centered around a big man. The Philadelphia franchise has been searching desperately for a big man to fill they’re gaping defensive hole in the frontcourt, and Bynum is big enough to fill any spot.

The 7’0″, 285 lb, Plainsboro, NJ, native is finally back home, for the most part. The young center averages stats as big as he plays putting up double-double numbers in the 2007-2008 and 2011-2012 NBA regular seasons respectively. Bynum also could be the missing piece in the Sixers roster when it comes to guard, Jrue Holiday.

On plays defined as “cuts”, Bynum shoots 80.1 percent when cutting to the basket. This opens up a brand new dimension of basketball for the 76ers and for Holiday as he now has one of the biggest targets in the NBA to dish to, which most likely will raise his assist totals by the end of next season. Bynum, in turn, would also see a sheer increase in points scored per game by having a more than average point guard at the helm of the offense.

More than anything, it looks as though the roster finally may be under control. With the loss of Iguodala and Harkless, the rotation seems as though it may come into order in terms of the wing position. Coach Collins now has many pieces to play with in terms of the entire team, but the 76ers have put themselves into the best position possible by acquiring Bynum.

This has been the best off-season the 76ers organization has seen in almost a decade and is one of the best this year in the entire NBA, falling behind the Lakers, Celtics and possible Hornets. The team now rivals only the Celtics and the Heat in vying for two spots in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Expect the 76ers to make a splash this season in the NBA. Big Boy Bynum will be playing with a chip the size of South Street on his shoulder.
