Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered their most costly game of the season yesterday, in terms of the outcome (a season-ending 21-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals), and the injuries suffered.

To start, quarterback Michael Vick broke a pair of ribs in his lower back. The injury occurred on the game’s second play, when blitzing linebacker Daryl Washington blindsided him after he completed a pass to Brent Celek. Vick did not tell anyone about the injury until after the game was over but it clearly affected his play, as he turned in his worst game since joining the Eagles.

Vick has not yet been ruled out for the Sunday night game against the New York Giants but given the status of the Eagles’ season (3-6 and fading fast), it appears very unlikely that Vick will play. This is a big blow to Vick’s MVP chances, which will undoubtedly go from zero percent to zero percent.

That means backup quarterback Vince Young, the originator of the now infamous term Dream Team, will get his opportunity to show what he can, or can’t, do.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin suffered a pair of injuries in the Arizona game. He injured the AC joint in his right shoulder in the first quarter. He missed part of the game but returned before suffering a hamstring injury that ended his day. His hamstring injury is the more serious of the two but there’s really no idea how much time he will miss. If he cannot play next week, the Eagles will need a new receiver to step up and drop passes or fumble with the game on the line.

Massive offensive tackle King Dunlap, who started at left guard in place of the injured Evan Mathis (his first start at guard), suffered a concussion yesterday. Whether he is able to play next week won’t matter if Evan Mathis is able to return from his turf toe injury. But if the Queen can’t play, and Mathis is not yet healthy, the Eagles may move Herremans back to left guard, and start Winston Justice at right tackle, or they can start Jamaal Jackson or rookie Julian Vandervelde at left guard.

Former Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie suffered a high ankle sprain, as well as torn ligaments in his ankle, on a kickoff return in the second quarter against Arizona yesterday. He didn’t estimate how long he would be sidelined but I personally think that he will miss the remainder of the season. And honestly, I don’t care. He’s a garbage player who has been having a garbage season. I’m looking forward to seeing Joselio Hanson go back into the slot like he belongs.

By the way, all of these injuries are completely irrelevant because the Eagles’ season is completely finished.
