Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

There are a lot of similarities between the situation with Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson and the past situation with wide receiver Terrell Owens.

Both are egotistical wide receivers with an incredible amount of talent who play when they want to play and loaf when they want to loaf. Both held out at the beginning of training camp because of a contract dispute.

And if things don’t change, there might be one more similarity between Owens and Jackson. They both could be suspended by the Eagles for conduct detrimental to the team.

Don’t tell me you really believe that DeSean Jackson overslept for one meeting and that’s why he was deactivated for the must-win game against the Arizona Cardinals. Not a chance.

Jackson practically admitted on Monday morning that his current contract situation was the reason why he wasn’t at the meeting on Saturday meeting. He didn’t mention anything about oversleeping. He just said that it has been very difficult for him to go to work every day. He also admitted that he’s probably done a few things that he would change if he could go back in time.

Howard Eskin reported that DeSean Jackson was out late on Friday night and in fact never even came home. I’ve also heard that a former player said that Reid would never bench a player for a game after missing just one meeting, suggesting that Jackson missed another meeting earlier this season.

Reports have also indicated that DeSean Jackson has financial problems and that’s why he really wants a new contract.

Jackson has since apologized to his teammates and the fans for missing the team meeting, which led to him being benched. But Reid was clearly annoyed at having to discuss the situation with Jackson during his press conference yesterday, and even hesitated when asked if Jackson is still his starting wide receiver (he said yes).

Personally, I believe that there is a lot more going on with the DeSean Jackson issue than we know about. I think he’s been a lot more of a pain than we know this season. I think it could get ugly soon.

Would I suspend Jackson for another game or even the remainder of the season? No, I would not, at least not based on the information that we know.

But if the situation doesn’t fix itself, or if there is a lot more that we don’t know about, then I would fully support Reid shutting down the Eagles’ big playmaking wide receiver for the remainder of the season.

Nobody is bigger than the team. Not even the speedy DeSean Jackson, whose actions probably cost the Eagles a victory yesterday.
