Enjoy It Now Eagles Fans: Life Doesn’t Get Much Better as a Dallas Cowboys Hater

I remember early in the 2000s when the Eagles would rout the Dallas Cowboys every time they played them.

Literally every time.

Let me give you some of the scores between 2000 and 204: 41-14. 40-18. 36-3. 44-13. 27-3. 36-10. 49-21. The Eagles were in the playoffs, winners of 12 or 13 every season, and the Cowboys were lucky to win five or six with whatever player they chose as their quarterback for that season.

But the past five or six seasons life as an Eagles fan has almost been better.

The Eagles aren’t as good as they used to be. The Dallas Cowboys are better than they used to be. Most seasons have come down to head-to-head performances between the two games. And with the exception of 2009 (and no, we’re not even going to go there), the Eagles have owned the Cowboys. Even when the Eagles aren’t able to beat the Cowboys or prevent them from reaching the playoffs, the Cowboys find a way to choke in the most awesome, enjoyable way possible.

The Eagles’ sweep of the Cowboys in 2010, highlighted by a 34-7 national television butt kicking of Rob Ryan’s “new and improved” defense, set up a winner-take-all game between the Cowboys and Giants in week 17. The Giants rose to the occasion, the Cowboys failed miserably, and for the third time in four seasons, the Cowboys and Tony Romo will not be playing in the playoffs. They will be watching.

I am well aware of the extremely disappointing season by the Philadelphia Eagles this year. But the Cowboys also have absolutely no excuse for missing the playoffs, let alone finishing third in the extremely weak NFC East. The Eagles, as usual, have bragging rights over the Cowboys this offseason.

In 2010, Eagles fans enjoyed the early season Dallas struggles that led to a 1-7 start and the firing of head coach Wade Phillips. By the time the Eagles finally played Dallas, it was week 14 and the Cowboys were rejuvenated under interim coach Jason Garrett. But the Eagles still won. They lost a completely meaningless season finale that likely would have been a big Eagles win had the game mattered at all to Philadelphia.

For all the attention Dallas, and Tony Romo, has received, this is still a franchise that has exactly one postseason victory in the last fifteen seasons. They’ve coughed up the division to the Eagles twice (the Christmas Day massacre in 2006 and the heavenly 44-6 beatdown in 2008), and even when they have reached the postseason, they’ve done nothing but lose in the most enjoyable way possible. No Eagles fan will ever forget Tony Romo’s fumble to Seattle in 2006, his last-second interception against the Giants in 2007, or the beatdown by the Minnesota Vikings and 40-year old Brett Favre in the 2009 playoffs.

There’s something about a team (and a quarterback) that plays good but never good enough that is just so enjoyable as a hater of the Dallas Cowboys.

I go into every season terrified by the hoopla and hype that Dallas is receiving and I wonder if this is finally the season that Dallas will take over the Eagles as the new NFC East powerhouse.

Nope. Hasn’t happened yet.

Dallas Cowboys seasons are getting to the point where I could not script a more enjoyable outcome.

The meltdowns, the last-second interceptions, the disruptive playmakers, the loudmouth coordinators, the outrageous stadium, Jerry Jones. I love all of it.

No, the Eagles don’t have a Super Bowl victory, and Cowboys fans, you can talk all you want about your five Super Bowl victories.

But right now, your team and your quarterback are among the best in the league to hate, and the most enjoyable to watch, especially late in the season.

As I sit here and mourn the disappointing season by my own team, I am comforted by the fact that, once again, the Dallas Cowboys did just a little bit worse than the Eagles, and the Eagles were a major part of that.

All this noise and this is what I hear “WAH!!! DREAM TEAM TO TEAM DELUSIONAL!!! MUST OVERCOMPENSATE IN OFFSEASON BY BEING A ROMO HATER!!! WAH!!!”

Typical Eagles fan reaction when they suck, talk shit about someone else. Pathetic…
