Philadelphia Eagles Workout Former Buffalo Bills Quarterback Trent Edwards
Earlier this week the Philadelphia Eagles worked out former Buffalo Bills QB Trent Edwards. Incumbent second-stringer Vince Young is due to become a free agent in the offseason, and based upon a lackluster season as the Eagles backup signal caller, it is unlikely he will remain with the club. Third string quarterback Mike Kafka is under contract for two more years at very reasonable salaries, but he is still inexperienced. For a team like the Eagles who have an immensely talented starting quarterback, but a QB whose style is not conducive to playing an entire 16 game schedule, it is imperative to have a quality replacement waiting in the wings. Based on their performances in real-time action in 2011, the immediate answer is neither Vince Young nor Mike Kafka.
Edwards has enjoyed minimal success in his NFL career, but some of that can be attributed to being a victim of circumstance; playing for bad teams, behind incredibly permeable offensive lines and with little talent around him. He has bounced around to a few different teams, with his last venture being in training camp with the Raiders before this season. The fact that he was cut and subsequently not on a roster at the end of the season allows him to sign with any team he chooses.
In his entire NFL career, Michael Vick has played in all 16 games only one time. If there is any team in the NFL that needs a quality backup it is without a doubt the Philadelphia Eagles. Edwards is only 28 and will more than likely be willing to work out a deal that is as beneficial for the Eagles as it is for himself. In 33 career starts, he has completed 60.5% of his passes for 927 yards, adding 26 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. In those 33 starts, however, he has also been sacked 69 times, which is an indication as to the amount of talent around him.
It’s clear that Vince Young will not be back in an Eagles uniform for the 2012 season, but I just hope whomever they decide to bring in goes about their job in a manner that does not draw any unwanted attention to a team that will probably have lofty expectations placed upon them once again.
