Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

The Eagles lost eight games this season. Five of them were by a blown fourth quarter lead, and another came on a failed fourth quarter comeback attempt (Buffalo). A seventh was a blowout, as expected, by the powerful New England Patriots.

And then there was the Seattle game.

With a 4-7 record, the Eagles entered their week 13 game against the Seattle Seahawks on life support. They likely needed to five their final five games, plus receive some help, to secure a postseason berth.

To win, they had to overcome the painful memories of a blowout loss to the Patriots, as well as a short week, and a long road trip out west. Oh, and they needed to win behind the performance of their backup quarterback, Vince Young, as Michael Vick was expected to miss his third straight game with broken ribs.

The game started ugly, and the Eagles quickly fell behind 14-0, and then 24-7, thanks to the gutty running of Marshawn Lynch.

But they mounted a comeback, cutting the deficit to 24-14, with an opportunity in Seattle territory to close the gap to a three-point game.

The Eagles, led by Young, faced a 1st and 10 on Seattle’s 23-yard line with 4:38 to go.

Until Young sidearmed this short pass to LeSean McCoy, which was intercepted by Seahawks linebacker David Hawthorne, and returned 77 yards the opposite direction for the game-clinching touchdown.

It was a much less painful imitation of the Ronde Barber play, and if you don’t know what I mean, you’re not an Eagles fan.

The play completely clinched a Seattle victory and ended any hopes of the Eagles finishing with a winning season.

To add insult to injury, Young’s next pass was also intercepted, giving him four for the day.

It marked the second time in the last five seasons (2007) that the Eagles lost to Seattle in week 13 in which the backup quarterback threw four interceptions, including one on his first pass of the game, and one on his last pass of the game. (One of the most amazing coincidences I’ve ever realized.)
