The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they have signed defensive end Trent Cole to a four-year contract extension, officially keeping him with the team through the 2017 season.

Head coach Andy Reid praise Cole’s work ethic, noting that it’s difficult to tell Cole’s first play from his last. He also said that he has an unbelievable motor that does not stop and his energy is contagious on the field.

Cole, 29, earned Pro Bowl selections in both 2007 and 2009, collecting 12.5 sacks each season. He has topped double digits in four of the past five seasons. Over the past six seasons, he ranks third in the NFL in sacks, trailing Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen. His 68 career sacks are the third most in franchise history, and with at least nine next season, he will move into second place.

He rated as the best 4-3 defensive end in the National Football League in both 2010 and 2011, according to Pro Football Focus. He ranked third in 2009 and fourth in 2008.

Cole, alongside of Jason Babin and his 18 sacks last season, gives the Eagles one of the best defensive end combinations in the league for years to come.
