According to a report by Tim McManus of Philly Magazine, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in free agent tight end Jeremy Shockey as the backup to Brent Celek.

Yes, that Jeremy Shockey. The one who was once dubbed by the New York Times as “public enemy number one” in Philadelphia. It’s also the same player who insulted the famed secondary of the 2002 Eagles (Brian Dawkins, Troy Vincent, Bobby Taylor, and Blaine Bishop, with Lito Sheppard, Sheldon Brown, and Michael Lewis as rookies) before ever playing a down against the Eagles, calling them “lucky” and “not that good.”

But that was ages ago.

Currently, Shockey is a 31-year old who probably doesn’t have much left in the tank, judging by the fact that he hasn’t been signed yet.

He brings good size to the Eagles, if he’s signed, as he stands 6’5 and weighs 250 pounds, and it’s possible that the Eagles like him enough to bring him on the team as a red zone target.

Last season, he played 15 games for the Carolina Panthers, catching 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns.

He previously played for the New York Giants (2002-2007) and the New Orleans Saints (2008-2010). He earned four Pro Bowl selections and one First Team All-Pro selection, despite never topping 894 receiving yards or seven touchdowns in a season.

The signature moment of his career is probably the game-winning touchdown pass he caught from Drew Brees in the fourth quarter of the Saints’ Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts in February 2010.

I predict that the Eagles will sign him, by the way. And I’m okay with it. I want players who can help the Eagles win, even if I used to hate them, and I think Shockey can help the Eagles.
