Earlier today, reports surfaced that the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in bringing in veteran free agent tight end Jeremy Shockey. In fact, recent reports have indicated that the team plans to give him a physical, increasing the likelihood that the team signs the 31-year old to a contract.

But a league official has also said that the Eagles are working out another veteran free agent tight end. This time, it’s Visanthe Shiancoe, who is scheduled to work out for the Eagles at Lehigh University on Tuesday.

Shiancoe, 32, is past his prime, and even in his prime, he probably wasn’t as good as his numbers indicated. From 2008 through 2010, he caught 145 passes for 1692 yards and 20 touchdowns, including 11 in the 2009 season. That’s the sixth highest single season total by a tight end since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

In 2011, his numbers dropped to 36 catches for 409 yards and three touchdowns, although that might have had something to do with the change in quarterback for Minnesota. They had Brett Favre in 2010 and Joe Webb and Christian Ponder in 2011.

Before he went to Minnesota, Shiancoe served as the backup to Jeremy Shockey on the New York Giants. It would definitely be ironic if Shiancoe beat out Shockey for the backup tight end spot with the Eagles, considering the four seasons he served as the backup to Shockey.

If Shiancoe (or Shockey) is signed, they will compete with Clay Harbor, the backup tight end in 2010 and 2011, as well as Brett Brackett and Chase Ford, for a roster spot.
