In an unspeakable tragedy, Garrett Reid, the 29-year old oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, was found dead in his dorm room at Lehigh University on Sunday morning.

Police officers received a phone call about Garrett Reid at 7:20 a.m. but they were unsuccessful in trying to revive Garrett, who was unresponsive when they arrived. His cause of death has not yet been established but there is no suspicious activity in his death. The investigation is still ongoing.

Eagles players gathered in a prayer circle before their walkthrough practice this morning. After practice, they waved off reporters and headed off the field. Reid was not at practice.

General manager Howie Roseman addressed the team about Garrett’s death. He broke down in tears during the announcement.

“It’s a tough morning for all of us in the Eagles’ family,” Roseman said. “Garrett grew up with this team, and this makes this news even harder for us to process. Our hearts go out to Andy, Tammy, [brothers] Britt, Spencer, [sisters] Crosby and Drew Ann.

“Coach has spent the morning informing his family. We ask sincerely that you respect the family’s privacy during this time. The team has been informed of this news, as has [owner] Jeffrey and Christina [Lurie]. …

“I’ve been with Andy a long time. He’s always been strong for us. We’re going to be strong for him right now. As a father and a friend, we’re all hurting.”

Garrett had been in the news in 2007 for an arrest on drug charges. He was in jail twice but he had seemingly turned his life around in the last five years.

The Eagles announced that assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and defensive coordinator Juan Castillo will take over the team in Reid’s absence. The Eagles have not yet announced how long Reid will be away from the team.

Per Andy Reid’s wishes, training camp practices will continue as usual. This afternoon’s practice will be held at the usual time of 2:45 p.m. Training Camp Live will not be held but will resume tomorrow afternoon.
