It took just 20 minutes into the first preseason game of the season for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick to suffer an injury.

Vick’s left hand–his throwing hand–collided with center Jason Kelce as he was throwing a pass. He immediately grabbed his hand, wincing.

Vick’s pass came on third down and was an incompletion, so he left the field anyway for the punt team. He did not return, partly because he had already played more than his expected quarter, and partly because the extent of his injury was unknown.

The entire Philadelphia fan base collectively held its breath for the next hour or so, until x-rays came back negative on Vick’s thumb. He is, essentially, fine, other than a thumb contusion, which is a bruised thumb.

Vick will benefit from having 11 days until the next preseason game, which is against the New England Patriots on Monday, August 20th. And, of course, the Eagles could sit Vick until he is truly ready to play because this is the preseason and fewer rips for the starting quarterback will give more reps to the remaining three quarterbacks on the roster: Mike Kafka, Nick Foles, and Trent Edwards.

For the game, Vick completed 3 of 4 passes for 6 yards. He did not run at all and he took one sack for seven yards.

Vick was without the services of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who suffered a hamstring injury literally just two minutes before kickoff that prevented from playing in the game. Maclin is fine, though, and the Eagles clearly just rested him to be safe.
