Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

Literally just minutes ago at practice, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha collided with safety Nate Allen on a play in 7 on 7 drills, injuring himself.

It appeared as if Asomugha and Allen banged heads on the play.

Asomugha reportedly was down for several minutes without moving, according to reports from Eagles’ beat writers on Twitter. He was likely unconscious.

He rose to his feet and was taken off the practice field. He left to go inside on the cart, with his right hand on his head, seemingly in pain.

Beat writers reported that Asomugha had blood on his jersey and was bleeding from his mouth, likely from a bitten tongue.

Les Bowen and other writers are speculating that Asomugha has a concussion, which would likely sideline him for the remainder of the preseason. Medical examiners did examine Asomugha’s head after the collision.

Allen, meanwhile, was coughing for several minutes on the sideline. He returned to the practice field and is currently participating. He is likely okay, or the Eagles would have taken him off the practice field as well.

More details on the extent of Asomugha’s injury will come following practice.

Asomugha is not a player the Eagles can afford to lose this season. Although the 31-year old had a disappointing 2011 season after a massive contract in the offseason, he is expected to fully bounce back with a dominant 2012 season. He is easily the most important member of the Eagles’ secondary, and is arguably the most important member on the defense for the Eagles in 2012.
