Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

The x-rays are finally in for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, and it’s very good news for Eagles fans.

Vick was knocked out of the game against the New England Patriots after sustaining a blow to the ribs in the first quarter. It was established late on Monday night that Vick did not have any broken ribs. Now it’s been revealed that Vick doesn’t have any rib cartilage damage either.

He has contusion of his ribs and the surrounding soft tissue around them, according to an MRI and a CT scan. Translation: He has bruised ribs.

The Eagles have not yet announced whether Vick will play against the Cleveland Browns on Friday night. It would make sense for him to sit out though, as the Eagles play the Browns in week 1 of the 2012 season.

The Eagles have one preseason game after that, against the New York Jets on Thursday, August 30th at 6:35 p.m. It would make sense for the Eagles to play Vick for a few series in that game. After all, the season opener is 10 days after that, as opposed to seven, and Vick has thrown just six passes in the entire preseason.

But head coach Andy Reid also said that Vick is experienced enough to open the season without any more reps in the preseason. So I don’t think Vick will play even though it would make sense.

In both 2010 and 2011, Vick missed three games with rib injuries. He suffered rib cartilage damage against the Washington Redskins in 2010, and he suffered a pair of broken ribs against the Arizona Cardinals in 2011.
