As expected, the Philadelphia Eagles will hold quarterback Michael Vick out for the remainder of the preseason, announced head coach Andy Reid on Wednesday.

“Really, in season, you would probably have him in there for the game,” Reid said. “But as I’m standing here today, unless something drastically changes, I’m not going to play him.

“Would he like more reps? Would I like him to get more reps? Yeah, both of us would like him to have more reps, but you bank on his experience and maturity to get him through a situation like this, so that’s what we’ll do.”

Vick will finish the preseason with the following passing statistics: 4-7, 11 yards.

He played in just 12 total snaps, nine of them dropbacks, and was injured twice.

The first came against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason opener when his throwing hand collided on the helmet of center Jason Kelce. Vick suffered a badly bruised hand and a thumb contusion.

The next came against the New England Patriots on Monday when Vick was leveled by defensive end/linebacker Jermaine Cunningham while unloading a deep pass to DeSean Jackson. The shot to Vick’s ribs knocked him out of the game but x-rays came back negative and it was later revealed that he did not suffer any cartilage damage.

He will be fine for the season opener, which comes on Sunday, September 9th at 1:00 pm against the Cleveland Browns.

Despite his two injuries, Reid said that he is not concerned with Vick.

“There’s a fine line there. He has to play the game,” Reid said. “It’s a violent sport. If you’re there worried about that part of it then you’re not going to perform to the best of your ability and you got to catch a break a little bit there – no pun intended – you got to catch a break in a positive way where you’re not absorbing the big hits.

Rookie third round draft pick Nick Foles, who has impressed through the first two preseason games, will start against the New York Jets in the team’s third preseason game. With Mike Kafka still sidelined with a fractured left hand, veteran Trent Edwards will take the rest of the reps, which will probably be more than two quarters.
