Former Philadelphia Flyers captain Rick Tocchet said today on Philadelphia sports radio 94.7 WIP that current netminder Ilya Bryzgalov needs to work on his work ethic among other things.

Tocchet was a guest on WIP Middays with Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow and they talked for about ten minutes on Bryz.

Here are some of the quotes from Tocchet

“He has to quit talking about the universe and get his game back.”

“I’m not saying he is lazy but he isn’t the the hardest (in practice).”

“He left some defensemen out to dry.”

(Talking 24/7) “When you are struggling give it a break, guys get annoyed.  You just lost three in a row and your are -7 you stink (and) you are still goofing around on camera you have to I guess pick your spots.”

“I think he just dove in the water without really testing it first.  I think he should have concentrated about being a goaltender and not worry about all the other stuff.”

“He has to get his game back he is a $51 million goalie he has got to be the starter April 8 (starting the playoffs).”

Some other things he Tocchet mentioned that he noticed when he was a coach for the Phoenix Coyotes was that Bryz would let in a goal and kind of just throw his hands up towards the defensemen.  Also, he said that it was easier there since Phoenix isn’t a big hockey market there isn’t much pressure.

I have to agree with Toch here, it seems like Bryz is just trying to be a media darling and he is giving up bad goals and likes to deflect it to the D.  I think this could be a reason you maybe see the blueliners playing harder Bobs than they do for Bryz.

Hopefully Bryz can find his way out the woods for a what the third time now?

4 Rants to “Former Flyers Captain Rick Tocchet Calls Out Ilya ...”

  1. DMR says:

IMO Bryz is a $51mil mistake brought to the team by Mr. Ed Snider to try and turn another dollar from the fan base. I don’t believe Holmgren or Clarke would of made a choice like Bryz. He just doesn’t fit into Philly. We are going to have to put up with his scarcastic primadonna attiude and yet another reason to raise ticket pricing. Most importantly, it’s obvious the other Flyers are uncomfortable even talking about him to the press. Where have I heard poor attiude and work ethic before describing a Russian Flyer…??

I was a fan of letting Bobs continue to be the starter here. People gave him so much flack and last year was only his rookie campaign. I would dump Bryz for a 4th round pick at this point. Looks like so far in two for two on the Progs and Bryz contracts being bad.

  2. TBH says:

THANK GOD IT IS NOT MY MONEY . FOR 51 MIL. I WAS EXPECTING A HELLA OF A LOT MORE . I THINK BOB & BOO WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTER , WE MAY HAVE HAD 5 OR 6 MORE WINS TO SAY THE LEAST . RIGHT NOW I WOULD GO WITH BOB AND PARK BRYZ’S ASS ON THE BENCH FOR A WHILE AND MAYBE BRING UP SOMEONE TO REPLACE HIM FOR AT LEAST A GAME OR 2 JUST TO SEE IF IT SINKS IN HIS SPACEY MIND .

    • Johnny Machurek says:

But if you bring up someone like Leighton that is a big contract, I think him just watching Bobs start will get to him. Maybe he can pull himself out of wherever he is in the ‘humangous big’ universe and get back to Earth and play some hockey.
I agree with what Tock had said in the interview that he played in non-hockey markets so there wasn’t much pressure.
