Where Do the Philadelphia Flyers Look Now for a Defenseman?

With Tim Gleason signing a four-year deal, Joni Pitkanen out with a concussion until likely March, and rumors that Ryan Suter isn’t going anywhere where do the Philadelphia Flyers look to pick up a defenseman.

Suter and Gleason were both atop the Flyers wishlist for a d-man who could help shore up a big hole on the blueline.  Philly will now have to shift their focus and two potential players the Flyers could go after wouldn’t require Philly to look far.

The first player the Flyers could look at is Brayden Schenn’s brother Luke Schenn.  Luke is what the Flyers really need to look for and that is a big, strong shutdown d-man.  Luke loves to hit and is an excellent shot blocker.  While he does have big shot from the point, his offense awareness can be lacking at time.  With all that said he would still be a great talent for the Flyers to posses.

If the Flyers want to come out guns blazing and make a huge splash, they should look at Suter’s teammate Shea Weber.  It will be hard to pry away Weber, but it is all up to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren and how bad he wants Weber. Personally I don’t Weber being moved but if the price is right I will welcome Weber with open arms.

Weber is a young Chris Pronger he is big and mean, is great in one-on-one battles, has a great point shot, and is a born leader.  He can at times take a bad penalty and can get out of position looking for a big hit.  Weber’s pros far outweigh any cons he has and he is already one of the best defensemen in the game right now.

That is just two options the Flyers could explore, the last one being almost a pipe dream, but don’t expect the Flyers to sit quietly at the deadline though.

[...] A:  Well of course Paul Holmgren is going to say our defense is fine, he doesn’t want to bring down morale.  As for me, I don’t think this defense is ok in any way.  Even someone that just watched the last few games could tell how bad we need D.  I have wrote a couple articles about it, I also stated who the Flyers could target.
