David Butler II - US PRESSWIRE

The Philadelphia Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million contract that will keep him in a Philly uniform through the 2015 season (plus an option for 2016).

Beyond the simple numbers: 31 saves, 2.90 ERA, 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings in 2011, here are ten interesting facts about Papelbon.

1. The Philadelphia Phillies called Jonathan Papelbon in 2003 to see if he would sign with them if they took him in the sixth round, but he said no.

2. Jonathan Papelbon has been cited repeatedly for taking a long time to throw the first pitch in the ninth inning. He says he has been fined over $10,000 for these instances.

3. After he recorded the final out of the 2007 World Series, Jonathan Papelbon says his dog, Boss, ate the ball.

4. Jonathan Papelbon didn’t give up a run in his first 25 career postseason innings, a major league record.

5. He doesn’t have enough innings pitched to qualify, but if he did, Jonathan Papelbon’s 2.33 career ERA would sit 20th best on the all-time list.

6. Jonathan Papelbon’s twin brothers, Jeremy and Josh, pitched in the minor leagues.

7. Only three men in history have ever pitched in as many innings (68.1) and posted a lower ERA (0.92) in a single season than Jonathan Papelbon in 2005.

8. Jonathan Papelbon holds the rookie record for most saves in April (10).

9. Jonathan Papelbon is an avid Jacksonville Jaguars fan and attends several games per season.

10. In nine years in professional baseball, Jonathan Papelbon has never had an at-bat. That could very well change as he moves to the National League.
