Philadelphia Phillies Infielder Wilson Valdez Accepts One-Year Deal; Avoids Arbitration
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached agreement with utility infielder Wilson Valdez on a one-year, $930,000 deal for the 2012 season. Valdez joins Cole Hamels as Phillies players that have avoided arbitration today; Hunter Pence is the only arbitration-eligible player remaining.
Valdez can play anywhere in the infield, as well as center field and even pitcher. He hit .249/.294/.341 with one home run and 30 RBIs in 300 plate appearances last season, bringing a slick glove on defense. Valdez saw significant action as a starter with Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins all missing substantial time due to injury.
Valdez is in his third year with the club, having joined as a minor league free agent in the winter of 2009. He was called up early in 2010 with Jimmy Rollins on the disabled list and played well enough to log 363 plate appearances in 111 games. With Valdez coming back and another corner infielder on the roster in Ty Wigginton, the Phillies likely won’t have room on their active 25-man roster for Michael Martinez.
