Philadelphia Phillies Sign Cole Hamels to One-Year Deal; Avoid Arbitration
The Philadelphia Phillies have avoided arbitration with left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels by signing him to a one-year deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
The deal is worth $15 million, and is one of the largest ever issued to a player in arbitration. Hamels becomes a free agent after the 2012 season. Given the success he has had with the Phillies – two All-Star teams, 74 wins, and a World Series MVP award – plus his age (just 28) and his good health, Hamels should easily get a nine-figure deal.
Last year, Hamels was 14-9 with a 2.79 ERA, finishing fifth in the NL Cy Young award voting. He teams with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee to give the Phillies arguably the best trio of starting pitchers in the game’s history.
