GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. Says Ty Wigginton Will Play First Base Until Ryan Howard Returns
Philadelphia Phillies GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. told MLB Network Radio today that Ty Wigginton will play first base until Ryan Howard returns from his injury.
Howard tore his Achilles tendon on the final at-bat of the 2011 season. He is expected to miss several months of play. Wigginton was signed in the offseason as a reserve infielder and pinch-hitter.
Wigginton is a former All-Star with the Baltimore Orioles. He hit .242/.315/.416 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 446 plate appearances last season with the Colorado Rockies. Wigginton can play first base, third base, second base, both corner outfield positions, and a little bit of shortstop.
As of now, it is likely John Mayberry, Jr. and Laynce Nix will platoon in left field. Many had thought Mayberry would fill in at first base while Howard was out.
