Free Agent Relief Pitcher Brad Lidge Signs With Washington Nationals on One-Year Deal
The Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-year deal with 35-year old free agent relief pitcher Brad Lidge, according to multiple sources. The new contract is worth $1 million, plus incentives.
Just yesterday, CSN Philly’s Jim Salisbury had reported the Phillies were nearing a deal that would bring Lidge back to Philly for a fifth season, but that apparently fell through.
Lidge posted a 3.73 ERA with 100 saves and a 10.6 strikeout per nine innings rate in 193 innings pitched in Philadelphia. He made $42.35 million for his four years, but put his name in Philadelphia lore by helping to deliver a World Series championship to the city.
Lidge converted all 48 saves – playoffs included – in his first season with the Phillies, earning a spot on the National League All-Star team and finishing fourth in the Cy Young award voting and eighth in the MVP voting. He followed that up with arguably the worst season of any closer in history – posting a 7.21 ERA with 11 blown saves – before settling down and posting two quietly productive, although injury-prone seasons.
Lidge was 0-2 with a 1.40 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched last season. He will be serving as a setup man in his new deal with the Nationals.
