Philadelphia Phillies Agree on Two-Year, $7.5 Million Deal With Kyle Kendrick
Remember the one-year, $3.585 million deal the Philadelphia Phillies signed Kyle Kendrick to about a month ago? That deal has been overridden by a new two-year, $7.5 million deal that will pay Kendrick an average of $3.75 million per year in both 2012 and 2013.
Kendrick will be entering the season as a long reliever and spot starter if needed. However, the Phillies have not hesitated to use Kendrick as a starting pitcher in the past; he had a career-best 2011 season in which he went 8-6 with a 3.22 ERA in 114.2 innings pitched.
Kendrick isn’t a strikeout pitcher. In fact, he annually has one of the league’s lowest K rates. He keeps his walks down though, pitches to contact and gets ground ball outs, and can pitch as both a starter or reliever. The two-year extension seems strange considering Kendrick is coming off a career-best season and likely won’t duplicate it. The Phillies seem to really like Kendrick in his role though, and it’s very likely he starts some games for the team this season.
