Former Philadelphia Phillies Outfielder Raul Ibanez Signs One-Year Deal With New York Yankees
Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez has agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Yankees, according to multiple sources. Ibanez’s deal will make him the new designated hitter for the Yankees.
He will be paid $1.1 million with performance bonuses of $2.9 million. Ibanez hit .245 with 20 home runs and 84 runs batted in last season with the Phillies, the final season of his three-year, $31.5 million contract he signed prior to 2009.
Ibanez is a .280 career hitter with 252 home runs for three different teams in 16 major league seasons. Ibanez struggled immensely playing left field last season but he will be a good fit as the DH, especially if the team pairs him well against righties: Ibanez had a .747 OPS against righties in ’11 compared to just .585 against lefties.
The Phillies will most likely be going with a platoon of John Mayberry, Jr. and Laynce Nix in left field, although Domonic Brown could see action as well.
