Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

Before the season, the Philadelphia Phillies had just two prospects in the top 100 in Baseball America’s list, given that the Phillies have traded away most of their top minor leaguers in recent years.

Domonic Brown has been ranked among the top prospects for three straight seasons, meaning he is no longer eligible to be ranked. Trevor May was considered the 69th ranked prospect in the game, and he has been tearing up Double-A Reading this season.

May is 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA in four starts this season; he has struck out 26 batters and walked just eight in 23 innings. He hasn’t given up a home run yet and is giving up just 4.7 hits per nine innings. May has a career strikeout rate of 11.8 per nine innings at the minor league level, and strikeouts are historically one of the top statistics that translate to the next level.

There’s no need to rush May considering the Philadelphia Phillies have a wealth of talent at the big league level. Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels are all legit aces, and Vance Worley and Joe Blanton are solid enough at the four and five spots in the rotation. Hamels is a free agent after the season and will likely be re-signed, but Blanton won’t be, and the Phillies will need a player to take his spot in the rotation.

Kyle Kendrick is currently signed to a two-year, $7.5 million deal that carries through the 2013 season, but there is an outside chance May could work his way into the starting rotation by next year. He will probably get the call up to Triple-A within a couple of months and depending how he does there will decide when the Phillies feel he is ready for the major leagues.

May is 6’5” and a power pitcher, and that should make him a pretty good major league starter down the line.
