The Philadelphia Phillies really couldn’t have too many more things going wrong for them. In addition to having superstars Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Cliff Lee on the disabled list, Cole Hamels could be the next to miss time, and it could be for a suspension.

Hamels hit Washington Nationals phenom Bryce Harper with a pitch in the first inning of today’s game, and then admitted afterwards to Matt Geib of The Philadelphia Inquirer that he did it on purpose. Hamels said he grew up watching old-time baseball and he wanted to continue that style of play.

Harper ended up stealing home off of Hamels, although the Phillies would hold on to win the game by a 9-3 score. Hamels lasted eight innings, giving up just one run on five hits and a walk, while recording eight strikeouts.

Hamels has been having his typically strong season in 2012, as he is 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 44 strikeouts to just six walks in 40.1 innings pitched. Since his rough start on April 9, Hamels has thrown five consecutive quality starts, and the Phillies are 5-0 during that span.

If he gets suspended, it will be a costly loss for a Phillies team that is now stuck in last place in the NL East after 29 games, following six straight wins by the Miami Marlins. The Nationals still maintain a half-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, following a successful series against the Phillies in which the Nats took two of three games.
