The Phoenix Coyotes took on the L.A. Kings at the Toyota Sports Center last night in the first game of their 2-game rookie challenge.

The Coyotes rallied in the third period to beat the Kings by a score of 8-7. The Coyotes were down 6-3 after two periods of play, but a resilient rookie squad surged in the third period of play.

Brett Hextall led the way in the third with 2 late goals and Colin Long had 3 assists in the win. Mark Visentin started the game in net for the Coyotes, but was pulled later in the game. Visentin made  29 saves on 35 shots. Marc Cheverie relieved Visentin in net and stopped 9 of 10 shots.

Andy Miele, who is fighting for an opening day roster spot, scored a goal of his own last night in the victory.

The teams will be in action again this afternoon at 2 P.M. mountain time. You can watch the game at www.phoenixcoyotes.com.
