Steve Nash Interested in Playing Overseas?
You can add Steve Nash to a growing list of NBA superstars who are showing some interest in playing basketball overseas with the league currently in a lockout that is expected to last well into the winter.
Paul Coro, the Suns beat writer for the Arizona Republic wrote a great article this afternoon regarding Nash’s possible interest in playing overseas if the lockout does prevent the league from starting the regular season on time. The article is one of the main sports stories on AZ Central as I am currently type this.
Like Coro mentioned in his article, the possibly of the Suns point guard playing over in Europe or another part of the world makes a ton of sense. The two-time MVP has a British passport and is one of the most popular basketball players in the world with born in South Africa to British parents, who happens to be Canadian and has a Chinese shoe deal.
When you think global, Nash is one of the first NBA players that you think of.
The veteran playing overseas seems logical for other reasons as well. Of course, he would still be able to continue playing a game that he loves. We all know Nash can still play at a high level at his age and there is no sense in him wasting time sitting through the lockout not being on the court.
He would also be very popular with the overseas fans as well. When the Suns had preseason games over in Europe a few years back, you saw a large amount of fans with Nash jerseys on. Having a large fanbase no matter what part of the world it may reside is always an attractive option for any player.
There are some setbacks to Nash possibly playing elsewhere as well. Josh Childress has been the one at the forefront of the discussion of NBA players going overseas to play. The Suns forward played for Olympaiacos BC for a couple of seasons over in Greece.
Childress in recent interviews has stated that playing in Europe isn’t all gravy. He thinks players need to learn about how difficult it can be to get paid by the team they are playing for, the long travel on buses and commercial flights and the different systems compared to the NBA that are mostly controlled by the head coaches and not players.
In the end, all of this is probably not worth worrying about. There may be a lot of talk of players wanting to playing in Europe in China if the lockout goes well into the regular season, but it may very well be a bluff on the players part in order to get a better deal from the owners.
Does anyone really see Kobe Bryant playing in Italy come November? I certainly don’t. You can put Nash in the same boat with Bryant. He may leave it open as an option, but at the end of the day like the rest of the superstars in the league, Nash will wait out the lockout to the end.
