All Quiet on the Phoenix Suns Front
In a normal NBA offseason, we would be discussing free agency and possible trades that the Suns could make to improve their roster at the moment. Unfortunately for basketball fans, this is no ordinary summer with the lockout putting all usual league business on the back burner.
On the Suns front, things are about as dead as you can get as far as news goes and expect that to continue over the coming weeks and months ahead unless there is significant progress made between the owners and players. Sadly, there is a better chance of snow in Phoenix during the summer months than the two sides coming to an agreement any time soon.
The real only Suns talk has centered around Steve Nash, Marcin Gortat and Mickael Pietrus.
Last week in an interview, the two-time MVP stated that he would be interested in going to play overseas if the lockout went well into the season. As of now, there have been no overseas teams that have offered Nash a contract, but the interest is certainly there.
Gortat will be playing in Russia if the lockout continues. The Suns center signed a deal last week with Spartak Saint Petersburg, a team in the Russian Professional Basketball League. Gortat does have an opt out in his deal where he could return to Phoenix at any time if the lockout comes to an end.
As for Pietrus, he has been in the news in several ways. He has voiced his displeasure of playing in Phoenix and saying that he wants to play elsewhere, including in Los Angeles with the Lakers. Only problem is that he is under contract with the Suns for one more season, so unless he gets traded, Pietrus has no other option but to play.
Injuries have also been a part of Pietrus’ offseason.
It was learn about a week and a half ago that the forward will have minor surgery on his right knee that will disable him from playing for his home country of France in the European Championship at the end of August. He is slated to be ready in time for training camp if the season does end up starting on time in October.
Hopefully we will have some more Suns news coming out in the weeks and months ahead, but this is the kind of offseason that we are more than likely stuck with until the new CBA situation is figured out. Buckle up Suns fans, it is going to be a long ride.
