Announcement regarding Roethlisberger expected Monday

Steelers fans, Monday will be judgment day and we’ll all be able to get a glimpse into what the future might hold for QB Ben Roethlisberger. Georgia DA Fred Bright said today that he has concluded his investigation regarding the claim against Ben Roethlisberger that he sexually assaulted a 20 year old female on March 5th.
Roethlisberger is facing his second accusation of sexual assault in a year and also is facing a civil lawsuit from a 2008 case in Lake Tahoe. His attorney, Ed Garland maintains Ben’s innocence. Mr. Garland also represented Baltimore LB Ray Lewis in a high profile murder case. Lewis was charged for murder stemming from a fight which erupted at a Super Bowl XXXIV party in which 2 individuals were stabbed to death.
If Roethlisberger is charged on Monday or even indicted, the NFL could step in a suspend Roethlisberger until the legal system runs it’s course. As soon as Michael Vick was indicted, he was suspended. So what are the ramifications for the Steelers?
Well, heading into the 2010 campaign with Dennis Dixon and possibly Charlie Batch on the roster aren’t a winning combination. Donovan McNabb is now a Redskin. The only starter with true experience on the open market now is St. Louis Rams former QB Marc Bulger, 33. There is another possibility out there if the Steelers won’t have Roethlisberger’s services next year.

Byron Leftwich. Leftwich knows the Pittsburgh offensive system since he played on the 2008 Super Bowl winning squad while serving as Roethlisberger’s backup. Leftwich is currently on the roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and will not be starting this year unless the Bucs starter Josh Freeman is injured. Tampa is a team with many holes on both sides of the ball and has made a commitment to build a team through the draft, so a late round draft choice for Leftwich might make sense, at least for no more than an insurance policy for the Steelers if Big Ben won’t be under center in 2010.
