The 1-4 (1-1) Adrian Maples had a heartbreaking loss last week. They still have an outside chance of making the playoffs at 5-4, but the only way that is going to happen is if they run the table, win their conference, which is still not out of the question completely, but it will be a tall order. That will start this week though as they travel to face the 0-5 (0-2) Ypsilanti Phoenix.
Ypsilanti has been really bad this year. They have been blown out in every single one of their games. To start off their season they traveled to play the Milan Big Reds and were sent home with a 42-8 defeat.
The Phoenix then hosted their next two games against the Saline Hornets and the Monroe Trojans. They were blown out in both games losing to the Hornets 49-14 and to the Trojans 47-6.
The following week they traveled to the Chelsea Bulldogs, a game I covered. They were soundly defeated once again 43-18, but this was the game they have scored most of their points in on the season.
Then last week they hosted the Tecumseh Indians and couldn’t stop them either. The final score in that one was 35-13.
I don’t think the Maples’ defense is going to have much trouble against the Phoenix. They have played some really good teams and haven’t been able to move the ball against any of them. Adrian isn’t that great, but they do play well. Adrian’s problems on defense have been finishing against good teams and I don’t think Ypsilanti meets that criteria. I do believe that Ypsilanti will score some points, but much of it will be too little too late and it won’t be enough.
Adrian’s offense has been similar to their defense. Costly mistakes have been their downfall on this side of the ball. The last few years they have had a great passing game, but this year they tried to run the ball. It has worked for some success, finishing the game has been their problem though. They have only won 1 game this year and that was to a bad Dexter Dreadnaught team and I think Adrian will execute like they did against them again this week. Adrian has lost some close games, which if a couple breaks go their way, we could have seen a much different season.
Last year when these two teams faced, the game was played in Adrian and they won by a final score of 20-6. The Maples were a lot better last year and the Phoenix was as well, even though their record doesn’t reflect it. They lost quite a bit of close games.
I don’t expect it to be as close this year. I think Adrian’s running game will get going like it did against Dexter and they will move it with ease. I think we will see some passes mixed in, but the focal point will be on the ground. Ypsilanti hasn’t stopped anyone this year and I don’t think they will start against the Maples. My prediction will be 35-14, Adrian.
This game will be played at Ypsilanti High School on September 28, at 7:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
