The 5-2 (2-2) Copley Indians bounced back again this week as their running back Aregeros Turner carried the Indians on his back to a victory over the 3-4 (0-4) Cloverleaf Colts. Turner had a big 2nd quarter to help his team to a lead at halftime and they just added more to their lead to secure the 38-21 win.
The game started off with Turner scoring his first rushing touchdown of the night. Their kicker added the extra point, but then disaster would strike. Cloverleaf’s Devin Cunningham received the kick on the 1 yard line and took it 99 yards to tie it up. The first quarter would end 7-7.
Cunningham would strike again early into the next quarter when he took a run and broke free for a 43 yard touchdown run, giving his team the 14-7 lead. The Indians’ Turner would not be outdone though. He would score 3 rushing touchdowns on three straight possessions for Copley. The score at halftime was 28-14.
Turner would add one more touchdown on the night and the Indians would also add a field goal. Cunningham would also add another kick return for a touchdown, this one of 95 yards, but that would finish the scoring, giving Copley the 38-21 victory.
The Indians’ defense did play well against the Colts and I thought they might. They have struggled to move the ball against most teams in their conference and they did once again on offense. The only success they had was from the one big run that Cunningham broke for 43 yards. That was the only 7 points that their defense gave up. They need to use this momentum from this game and use it going forward.
Their offense was amazing, or I guess I should say Turner was amazing, because that was there offense this week. I really have no problem with it. You’re best player should make plays and he did. I want to give the offensive line credit though for giving him holes to hit and for him to make plays. If their line can continue to make space for him like this, then he will continue to have success like he did. They are going to really need it going forward if they still want to make the playoffs.
The only thing that I really think they need to work on from this game is special teams. That almost kept them in the game, because they couldn’t stop Cunningham. He did have explosive speed and was difficult to bring down, but this was a break down on the coverage team. If they all can’t move down the field together in a wall, then they are going to create lanes and I’m sure there are more talented teams that have a returner with similar talents. It could end up costing them a game.
Copley will look to make this win into a streak when they will hit the road and travel to play the 4-3 (2-2) Wadsworth Grizzlies. This week Wadsworth hosted the Green Bulldogs and the Bulldogs defeated the Grizzlies 21-9.
Cloverleaf will head home and try to snap their losing streak as they still seek their first win in conference play when they take on the 5-2 (3-1) Tallmadge Blue Devils. The Blue Devils lost their first conference game this week they lost to the Nordonia Knights 34-28.
