Illinois High School Football: Week 8 Lake County Game of the Week
This week’s Lake County Game of the Week features a North Suburban Conference Lake Division battle between the 6-1 Stevenson Patriots, who will travel to face the 5-2 Lake Zurich Bears. Stevenson can clinch the divisional title with a win and solidify their playoff standing before the pairings are announced on October 20.
Stevenson comes in after a hard-fought 22-16 overtime win at home against Lake Forest in Week 7. Willie Bourbon scored in overtime to give the Patriots the win. Bourbon finished with over 210 passing yards while wide receiver Alan Velev had six catches for nearly 100 yards. There has been a connection all season with Bourbon and Velev and against a talented Lake Zurich defense, that connection will be severely tested. Stevenson is on the road for their final two games of the season.
Lake Zurich and their great defense gave up just three points last week against Libertyville, but the offense couldn’t get on the board in a 3-0 loss. The Bears lost star running back Connor Schrader on the first play of the game last week and he may not return this week. Jake Stauner stepped in last week and rushed for over 85 yards, but not having Schrader is a big blow to the Lake Zurich offense. The defense has allowed just 24 points all season and will need to continue that.
This has the look of a low-scoring game with a sophomore quarterback in Bourbon going into a tough atmosphere against a team averaging just 4 points a game given up. If Bourbon can keep the chains moving and dent the scoreboard once or twice, it may be enough. The loss of Schrader is huge but if he plays, it changes a lot. In the end though, I think the Patriots will have just enough to combat the home crowd in Lake Zurich. I’ll take Stevenson 14-6.
