The playoff impact of this week’s McHenry County Game of the Week is huge as the 4-3 Crystal Lake South Gators face the 4-3 Jacobs Golden Eagles. The winner of this game likely clinches a playoff berth while the loser must win their final regular season game to have any chance of going to the postseason.
Crystal Lake South has rallied from a 1-3 start to win three straight games, including a 36-22 win against Dundee-Crown last week. Zevin Clark rushed for over 200 yards with two touchdowns in the win as South scored 29 straight points to take control of the game. Clark has been a big key to the turnaround for the Gators in recent weeks and against a shaky Jacobs defense, Clark has the chance for another big game.
Jacobs broke a two-game losing streak with a 34-16 win over defending Class 6A champion Prairie Ridge last week. Bret Mooney threw two first-half touchdown passes to Hunter Williams to pace the Golden Eagles in the win. Greg Sidor had three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to rally Jacobs after trailing 16-14 going into the fourth quarter. Jacobs needed to bounce back after two rough losses in recent weeks but now faces a team in the same position they are, needing a late season win.
This game looks like one where getting a win this week would be easier than doing it next week. South is facing a short turnaround with a Wednesday game at Grayslake Central, while Jacobs has to face rival Dundee-Crown on the road in a game where if Jacobs loses and D-C wins, this week would be for a playoff berth. Mooney has improved for Jacobs in the passing game as the season has gone on and Clark is rushing well for the Gators. I think though that South will keep their roll going. I’ll take the Gators 35-24.
