The 6-2 (3-2) Cadillac Vikings took care of business this week and clinched their 4th straight trip to the playoffs. A strong running game behind Riley Norman made it possible as his quarterback Jalen Brooks had another big game as they took it to the 0-8 (0-7) Clio Mustangs 42-6.
Cadillac got it going in the first quarter when Brooks capped off their opening drive with a one yard touchdown plunge. That would be just the beginning. He scored again in the quarter, this time he broke free and ran 54 yards for another touchdown rush. He would add one more before the quarter ended when he scored from 7 yards out. They led 21-0 at the end of the first.
Brooks wasn’t done yet. In the second he scored twice more, the first was a 23 yard touchdown run and the second was a 16 yarder. Clio would add a touchdown before the half ended, but they wouldn’t be able to add the extra point. The score would be 35-6 at the intermission.
There was only one score in the second half and it came in the 3rd quarter when Brooks once again took another score in. After the extra point the score would become 42-6 and that would hold for the final.
For everything that the offense, or should I say Brooks did, I am more impressed by what the defense did. I thought that they could possible come out and shut down the Mustangs and that is exactly what they did. They did recover a fumble, but for the most part it was keep everything Clio did in front of them and tackle. Norman led the team with 8 tackles and Brooks had six tackles to go along with what he did on offense. Giving up the 6 points is quite impressive and they are going to need this effort going forward, because the team they will end their season against is going to be a tough one.
Brooks was the offense and he was truly unstoppable running the ball. He ended up with 22 carries for 230 yards and 6 touchdowns. He added 50 yards passing on 4 completions with 8 attempts. Their back-up wasn’t bad either at quarterback, Lewis Finch who threw 4 passes, completed 3 of them for 45 yards. Their running back Tanner Derror rushed the ball 6 times for 45 yards. These numbers are all impressive and it was definitely made possible by the offensive line that made gaps and protected to help make it all work. This was an inferior opponent and next week won’t be, but I think they need to ride the momentum going into the game. The one problem I see though is that they are relying heavily on Brooks, someone next week is going to need to step up and help him out to win.
Cadillac will come home to face against the conference winning 7-1 (5-0) Traverse City Central Trojans. This week the Trojans destroyed the Gaylord Blue Devils on the road 43-19.
Clio is still looking for their first win when they go back into conference play when they travel to Ortonville, Michigan to face the 0-8 (0-7) Brandon Blackhawks. This week Brandon traveled to the Holly Bronchos and came up short 35-27.
