Lisa Allmendinger – Chelsea Update

Just as I thought would happen, the 5-3 (5-0) Chelsea Bulldogs have extended their winning streak to five in a row and have clinched the Southeastern Conference-White title when they handed the 0-8 (0-5) Dexter Dreadnaughts the 34-14 defeat. Chelsea sat their starters in the second half, but their running back Berkley Edwards set the tone early as he rushed for big numbers in this one.

The Bulldogs got it going at about the halfway point of the opening quarter when Edwards took a handoff 61 yards for a touchdown. Their kicker Zach Rabbitt would add the extra point. A couple minutes later, Edwards would cap of a drive with a yard touchdown plunge. At the end of the first, Chelsea led 14-0.

Edwards wasn’t done yet though. Early into the 2nd he would score again, this time from the 2 yard line on another rush. Later in the quarter, Chelsea’s quarterback Logan Brown would get in on the action when he would find Edwards who would take it in for an 8 yard touchdown reception. As time wound down in the half, the Bulldogs’ gave their receiver Nate Bossary a series at quarterback and he went 2 for 2, one of them going to Luke Hollandswort for a 13 yard touchdown pass. The score at halftime would be 34-0.

The only scores after the break would be from Dexter. In the 3rd Tony Shiguango would find the end zone on a 1 yard rush. Then in the final quarter Kyle Koenig would hook up with Matt Kasten for an 11 yard touchdown pass. That would make the final score of 34-14.

I had an idea that this would happen. Chelsea’s starting defense had no trouble shutting down Dexter and keeping them off the board. The game would have gotten really out of hand if they hadn’t taken the starting line-up out. The game was already over at the half, so it was good to see sportsmanship to not intentionally to run it up and allow other players to see the field. Another upside to this, you can see what talent you have in the underclassmen if you get up in big in games like this. A problem that comes with playing a team like the Dreadnaughts is getting too over-confident about what they did and having a let down in their next game. A victory next week secures a spot in the playoffs. If they lose they have a shot, but if depends all on playoff points and where they fall at.

The offense was very good in the first half as well. Edwards was clearly unstoppable and Chelsea got to see what other players can do in different positions. A game like this is a good time to try new things since they established a commanding lead and the threat of being upset had passed. Same thing I said about the defense does apply here though as well, hopefully they haven’t gotten over-confident in what they have done against an inferior opponent, because they are definitely in a must-win game next week.

Chelsea will look to win their six in a row when they host the 4-4 (3-2) Haslett Vikings. This week Haslett came up short at home against the Williamston Hornets 25-22

Dexter is still looking for their first victory of the season and they will try to get it in their final game against the 1-7 (1-5) Northwest Mounties at home. This week the Mounties traveled to Parma, Michigan to face the Western Panthers and were sent home with a loss 32-10.
