Level 2 of the Wisconsin prep football playoffs begin on Friday. If the first level of the playoffs are any indication of what we’re in for, this weekend should provide us with another great slate of games.

The first level of the playoffs saw upsets and plenty of excitement. Stevens Point Panthers were finally able to defeat the Green Bay Preble Hornets 43-35 in 4 overtimes. It took a last second hail mary for the La Crosse Logan Rangers to defeat the Menomonie Mustangs 25-21. The Waunakee Warriors got a major scare when they were in a dog fight for most of the game against the Wilmot Union Panthers. The Warriors were able to get a couple of late touchdowns and ended up winning the game 28-7.

As for upsets you ask? Well there were a few. The 7 seeded Waukesha West Wolverines upset number 2 Waterford Wolverines 14-12. Another 7 seed upset a 2 seed in Division 4. The St. Croix Central Panthers handled the Northland Pines Eagles 34-20. The biggest upset in my opinion however came in Division 6 where the Darlington Redbirds defeated the Deerfield Demons 21-20.

The next level of playoff action should provide the same amount, if not more excitement. Can the powerhouse teams of Eau Claire Regis, Edgar, West De Pere, Waunakee and Arrowhead advance to level 3? Will there be any more upsets happening this round? And the most important question, what are the top games in each division? Well that is what I’m here for and in the next seven slides you will see what my top game is for each of the seven divisions. I will also be giving you who I think will win in those seven games.

DIVISION 7-Owen-Withee @ Suring

D7
OWBLACKHAWKFOOTBALL.COM

The (3)Owen-Withee Blackhawks (8-1) travel to take on the undefeated (2)Suring Eagles (9-0) in the top game in Division 7. The Blackhawks narrowly escaped with a victory last week, defeating Gilman 20-16. The Eagles on the other hand had no trouble in their victory over Almond-Bancroft, winning 42-13. This should be one of the better games in all of Level 2 play, with both small schools looking to move on to Level 3.

MY PICK: I went back and forth for awhile on this one. But when it comes down to it, I am going to lean slightly towards Suring on this one. Owen-Withee will give them the game of their lives though.

3 of 8

DIVISION 6- Manitowoc Lutheran @ Shiocton

D6
Matthew Apgar-GANNETT WISCONSIN MEDIA

The 8-1 (2)Shiocton Chiefs will host the (3)Manitowoc Lutheran Lancers (8-1) in this Level 2 match up. The two teams are coming off very different victories as the Chiefs were able to dominate Reedsville 51-0, and the Lancers escaped their contest against Lourdes Academy with a 27-20 victory. The two teams come from tough conferences, as both of their losses came against the eventual league winner. Another hard-hitting, tough matchup in Division 6.

MY PICK: I'm going with my gut on this one as I pick the Manitowoc Lutheran Lancers to come out victorious in this contest.

4 of 8

DIVISION 5-Stratford @ Spencer/Columbus

D5
Casey Lake-WAUSAU DAILY HERALD

The lower seeded (6)Spencer/Columbus Rockets (7-2) will play host to the (2)Stratford Tigers (7-2) on Friday night. The reason being is that in the first level of the playoffs, the higher seeded team hosts the game. In the second level, if there is a game where one team hosted (Stratford) in the first level and the other team (Spencer/Columbus) did not, the team who has not played a home game hosts the level 2 game. Got all that?

These two towns are separated by all of 14 miles, although they did not play in the same conference. The Tigers come out of the Marawood Conference in which they finished second to the Edgar Wildcats. The Rockets came out of the Cloverbelt Conference in which they finished third behind powerhouse Eau Claire Regis and Stanley-Boyd. Both of their team's league play prepared them for this contest.

MY PICK: Stratford goes on to win this contest and keeps playing on as head coach Cal Tackes, who is retiring at season's end, will live to fight on another day. Rockets will make a close game out of it though.

5 of 8

DIVISION 4-Roncalli @ Lakeside Lutheran

D4
Matthew Apgar-GANNETT WISCONSIN MEDIA

The undefeated (2)Lakeside Lutheran Warriors (9-0) will host the (3)Roncalli Jets (7-2) Friday night. Both teams won their Level 1 games pretty handily, with the Warriors defeating Lake Mills 24-7 and the Jets taking care of Edgerton 27-8. The Warriors are rolling right now, winning the Capitol-North Conference with ease. The Jets finished second in the Olympian-Packerland-Large Conference.

MY PICK: Don't let the Jets record fool you. Their two losses come against two very good teams, Wrightstown and Brillion and the Jets finished only one game behind the two for the conference crown. I'm going with Roncalli to end the Warriors season.

6 of 8

DIVISION 3-Two Rivers @ West De Pere

D3
Matthew Robinson-GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE

This game could very well take "game of the week" honors. The (1)West De Pere Phantoms (9-0) will host the (4)Two Rivers Raiders (8-1) in what looks to be a very good Level 2 showdown. The Phantoms are the defending Division 3 state champion and looked poised for another title this year. The Raiders on the other hand could very well be the team to knock off the Phantoms this year, even though they just got by Menasha last week 22-19.

MY PICK: This game can easily go either way. Two Rivers has a very good football team, but this week is not the week the Phantoms go down. I'm going with West De Pere.

7 of 8

DIVISION 2-Waunakee @ DeForest

D2
Greg Dixon-MADISON.COM

Speaking of "game of the week" honors, this game has that potential as well. In the same rule as the Stratford-Spencer/Columbus game, (5)DeForest Norskies (7-2) will host the (1)Waunakee Warriors (9-0). These two teams played in week two of the regular season, with the Warriors coming away with the 24-14 victory. Last year the Norskies could not quite knock off the Warriors, losing in the regular season 14-10 and then later in the year in the playoffs 17-7. Can the Warriors keep their 45-game winning streak going and move on to Level 3 of the playoffs?

MY PICK: The answer to that question is yes. The Warriors keep rolling along as the seniors on that team want to come home with another state title, their fourth title in a row. I pick Waunakee to keep rolling through the playoffs.

8 of 8

DIVISION 1-Stevens Point @ Appleton North

D1
Dan Powers-POST-CRESCENT

This Level 2 match up pits the (4)Stevens Point Panthers (8-1) traveling to the (1)Appleton North Lightning (9-0) on Friday night. It took four overtimes for the Panthers to defeat Green Bay Preble 43-35 a week ago. The Lightning on the other hand were able to take care of Superior easily, 35-0. The Lightning steam rolled through the regular season, winning the Wisconsin Valley Football Association-North Conference. The Panthers lone blemish on their schedule was a regular season finale loss to Marshfield, as those two teams tied for the Wisconsin Valley Football Association-South Conference championship.

MY PICK: Don't let that lone regular season loss and the near loss a week ago fool you about the Panthers, they are a very good football team. The Lightning will prove to be too much though, as I pick Appleton North to move on to Level 3 play.
