Illinois High School Football: Class 4A Game of the Week
The Class 4A playoffs get underway this weekend and this week’s Game of the Week features the 5-4 Geneseo Maple Leafs at the 6-3 Sandwich Indians on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
The 6th-seeded Maple Leafs had to win their last two games just to have a chance to make the playoffs and had enough playoff points to get into the postseason. Geneseo pitched a shutout last week in a 28-0 win over LaSalle-Peru. Rayce Singbush had two touchdowns to lead the Maple Leafs in the win where the Geneseo defense forced turnovers on the first three possessions of the game. Geneseo is averaging 31 points per game while giving up 21 a contest.
The 3rd-seeded Indians started the season 5-1 before struggling down the stretch including a 20-14 loss to Lisle last week to end the regular season. Seth McDonald rushed for over 145 yards while Austin Bruenig added 125 yards on the ground with both scoring touchdowns. Sandwich reached the Class 4A quarterfinals last season and has been dominant on defense all season, giving up under eight points a game. The Indians are averaging nearly 21 points per game.
Those two teams saw each other two years ago in the playoffs where Sandwich beat Geneseo 10-7 in the second round. This game could be very similar in terms of score by the end. Geneseo has had a winning record for 50 straight years but I think that the Maple Leafs won’t be able to pull this one off on the road with the stacked Sandwich defense. I’ll take Sandwich 17-13 to advance to the second round.
