Illinois High School Football: Class 8A Game of the Week

Game of the Week

The biggest class of Illinois High School Football produces a rematch from Week 5 as the 5-4 Warren Blue Devils go to Lincolnshire to face the 7-2 Stevenson Patriots in the Class 8A Game of the Week on Friday night at 7 p.m. Stevenson defeated Warren 39-7 in North Suburban Conference play earlier this year.

The 12th-seeded Blue Devils had a three-game winning streak snapped in a 17-13 loss to Lake Zurich last week. Adam Reuss threw for nearly 200 yards while Connor Iwema scored both of Warren’s touchdowns in the loss. The Blue Devils are playing better since the two teams first met, averaging nearly 30 points per game. Warren is averaging about 24 points a game but is giving up 20 points a game as well and will need to keep Stevenson under 21 points to have a chance.

The 5th-seeded Patriots come into this game off a 28-14 win against Zion-Benton on the road to end the regular season. Stevenson trailed at halftime but Willie Bourbon scored three times in the second half to rescue the Patriots from a defeat. Anthony Bozin scored Stevenson’s other touchdown. The Patriots are averaging 29 points a game while giving up only 16 points a contest. Bourbon will need to show he can run the offense for the first time in the playoffs.

When these two teams met five weeks ago at Stevenson, the Patriots scored on the first play of the game and took the Warren crowd out of the game right away as Bourbon threw for over 280 yards and three touchdowns. The Blue Devils can’t allow that to happen again if they want to come away with an upset victory. I think Bourbon though will be able to shake off whatever playoff jitters he may have and lead Stevenson to a victory. I’ll take Stevenson 34-21.
