One of the most coveted prizes in recruiting this year is running back Derrick Green. He is considered to be the #1 running back, the top recruit coming from the state of Virginia and overall at 13th, regardless of position. He has upwards of 40 offers from different schools. He has that narrowed down to only six. Who will be the team to sign this coveted back?

Green is from Richmond, Virginia. He plays for the Hermitage Panthers and he has helped them to an 8-0 record thus far. With 3 home games to end the season, they’re looking to take their unbeaten record into the playoffs. They will look to put their weight on the shoulders of their 6’0”, 220 pound running back.

After seeing Green in action, I can see why everyone wants him. He is solidly built and he has great straight line speed. He’s built to play in a pro-style offense. His hands are okay, so playing in a spread wouldn’t fit his abilities as well and he doesn’t have the greatest lateral speed. He’s a guy you give the ball 30+ times a game and let him wear down the defense. You wouldn’t want to be in front of him after he has gained a head of steam either. What also impressed me though; he’s a great blocker for a running back. It’s going to scary to see what he does when whichever school he chooses strength coach works with him.

The schools that he has narrowed his choices to are: the Auburn Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Ole Miss Rebels, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

From the rumor mill, there were talks that he was going to sign with Auburn. When that didn’t happen, many believed that he was going to commit to Michigan during his official visit and then it was also belief he was going to sign with the Volunteers. He’s still unsigned and it’s possible that Michigan could be the frontrunner again, especially with Auburn and Tennessee continuing to lose.

The Volunteers though present the opportunity where Green could start early, since they’re in need of a running back. Michigan might present the best fit though, since he is built to play Big Ten football. The talk is though that Tennessee, Michigan and Auburn are his top 3.

This could be an interesting decision that could come down to signing day. He’s definitely that running back that you can build your team around and could be the gem of any of these three teams’ recruiting classes.

It should also be pointed out that if he chooses the Wolverines, he will be joined in that class by the #2 quarterback prospect in the nation, Shane Morris. We could see what the future of the program would be if Green decides to join that class.
