This week’s Class 5A Game of the Week features two teams that won their first round playoff games at home as the 7-3 Sycamore Spartans face the 8-2 Montini Broncos on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a chance to move on to the quarterfinals.
The 6th-seeded Spartans defeated Chicago King 35-13 in the first round. Austin Culton put on an offensive display with over 180 yards rushing and four touchdowns to lead the Spartans to the victory. Sycamore finished with 320 yards of total offense in the win and will need to keep the pressure up this week against a team they lost to two years ago in the playoffs. Sycamore is averaging 26 points per game while giving up just over 16 points per contest.
The 3rd-seeded Broncos are on a three-game winning streak after defeating Bremen 54-13 in last week’s first round. Joe Borsellino had three touchdowns to pace Montini with five catches for over 90 yards along with over 30 yards rushing. Montini is looking to win their fourth straight Class 5A title in 2012 and are averaging over 34 points a game while the Broncos’ defense is giving up around 18 points a game in 2012.
This could turn into a game where the experience factor comes into play with how many postseason games that this Montini team has played. Sycamore must keep control of the football for at least 30 minutes and keep the Montini offense off the field. Montini has the ability to score in bunches and might just do that in this game. In the end though, I think that Montini will move on to the quarterfinals and keep their chances of five straight titles alive. I’ll take Montini 35-20.
