First there was Erin DiMeglio from South Plantation high school in Florida, now there is Sami Logan from Centennial (Corona, California) high school. Last Friday, Logan completed an 18-yard pass to senior Jordan Dye against Roosevelt (Eastvale, California) high school, in tribune for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Logan and Dye, who both lost their mothers to breast cancer, proved that even the simplest thing can be memorable.
“That’s what amazed me most, the reaction of the crowd…Word had spread around campus that this might be happening, and there were so many people there to support the effort,” says Matt Logan, Centennial high school football coach.
Last Fridays game was Sami Logan’s first appearance at quarterback. Her experience was limited to Centennial’ls powder puff game. She had served as the football teams water girl for many years and ideas were raised of her participating before the game. CIF-Southern Section rules required Sami Logan to participate in full pad practice for two weeks, before becoming eligible.
It was Coach Logan’s idea for Sami Logan to throw to Dye. Coach Logan gave the other staff members notice, before the game, and there was no objections.
“I noticed they were blitzing, so I knew I had to get rid of the ball as quickly as possibly,” says Sami Logan.
According to Dye, he was every bit nervous about the catch. Although the Roosevelt didn’t take it easy on Dye and Logan, Dye still made the incredible catch.
