Yesterday Downers Grove North (IL) proved why they are one of the best teams in Illinois. They beat Thornton (IL) 29-13 in the 7A second-round playoffs.
Downers Grove North looked great and seemed to have carried their momentum from their previous game with top-seeded Batavia.
There was an exchange of fumbles by both teams, which led to junior Kyle Leto’s 17-yard touchdown run. Leto’s run gave Downers Grove North a 6-0 lead in the first and the Trojans didn’t look back.
David Edwards, Trojan quarterback, made it 13-0 with a yard plunge and Brandon Salter, Trojan running back, had a three-yard touchdown run to solidify a solid lead.
Although Thornton is one of the best teams in Illinois, Downers Grove North’s defense and running game was just too much. They had a commanding 19-0 lead in the first half and went up 29-0 in the fourth.
JoWahn Brown, Thornton’s quarterback, had a couple great touchdown passes to make the game interesting, but Downers Grove North’s lead was just enough to seal the game.
“Until the last four minutes of the game, our defense had one of the best defensive performances I’ve seen for Downers Grove North…I can’t say enough for the first three-and-a-half quarters of defense we played,” says John Wander, Downers Grove North Coach.
Michael Dashut, Trojan linebacker, had an interception at the Thornton 35 and returned it to the 24.
“It was just one of those nights…Some fumbles they fell on, and some of theirs we didn’t. It’s disappointing. I feel real bad for the kids,” says Bill Mosel, Thornton coach.
