It is down to the final eight teams in Class 2A as the quarterfinals get underway this week. The Class 2A Game of the Week features the 11-0 Aledo Mercer County Golden Eagles visiting the 9-2 Amboy-LaMoille Co-op Clippers on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The second-seeded Golden Eagles roll into this quarterfinal after a 42-14 win over Rockford Lutheran in the second round. Tanner Matlick threw four touchdown passes and finished with over 300 passing yards. Payton Holmes added seven receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown. Aledo’s defense forced five turnovers and has given up just 72 points all season long. The Golden Eagles offense has put up 46 points per game and 507 points overall this season.
The fourth-seeded Clippers won 43-18 on the road over Orion in the second round of the playoffs. It was all running, all the time for Amboy-LaMoille with over 475 yards on the ground and not a single passing attempt. Cooper Nelson had over 235 yards rushing in the rout. The Clippers are averaging 28 points a game on offense while giving up just under 15 points a contest. This is Amboy’s third home game in the last four weeks.
This game boils down to whether Amboy-LaMoille can slow down the Aledo Mercer County passing game. If the Clippers can do that and keep the Golden Eagles off the field with their running game, there is a chance at an upset. Aledo lost in this round last season and has a chip on their shoulder now because of it. I don’t think Aledo Mercer County is going to be stopped this week and may not be stopped before the state title game.
I’ll take Aledo Mercer County 35-16.
