Game of the Week

The 2012 high school playoffs in Illinois have worked their way to the quarterfinals in Class 3A. This week’s Class 3A Game of the Week features the 10-1 Aurora Christian Eagles at home to face the 9-2 Winnebago Indians on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The ninth-seeded Indians have scored points in bunches in the playoffs after their second straight 56-point performance in a 56-20 win over Elmwood-Brimfield Co-op in Round 2. The Indians had six different players score in the win and racked up a 43-7 halftime lead at home on the top seed. Winnebago is averaging over 41 points per game while allowing 21 points per contest, which will be severely tested this week by a high-scoring Aurora Christian offense.

The fourth-seeded Eagles escaped on the road with a 28-21 win over conference rival Immaculate Conception in the second round. Joel Bouagnon had over 125 yards rushing and two touchdowns while Ryan McQuade found Cory Windle for two second half touchdowns to help Aurora Christian score the victory. The Eagles have scored 500 points this season or just over 45 points a game while giving up just under 12 points a game.

This has high-scoring written all over it with how the Winnebago offense has been going and how the Aurora Christian offense has been all season long. The Indians have to continue playing that way if they want to keep up with the Eagles and their talented offense. I think no matter who wins this game, it comes down to the team to hit 40 points first. In the end though, I see Aurora Christian having a chance to continue their defense of last year’s state title.

I’ll take Aurora Christian 42-35.
