This week’s Class 5A Game of the Week features two teams that are very familiar with each other from battles over the last few years in the regular season and in the playoffs as the three-time defending state champion 9-2 Montini Broncos hit the road to face the 11-0 Marian Central Hurricanes on Saturday at 5 p.m. Marian Central defeated Montini 49-24 in Week 7 of the regular season.
The third-seeded Broncos got a last-second field goal for a 24-22 win over Sycamore in Round 2 and are riding a four-game winning streak into Woodstock for the quarterfinal. Andrew Harte hit a 34-yard field goal with one second left to clinch the win. Joe Borsellino had nearly 60 rushing yards and a touchdown along with six catches for Montini. The Broncos are averaging 33 points a game while giving up a bit over 18 points per contest in their quest for another state championship.
The second-seeded Hurricanes beat in-city rival Woodstock North 41-20 in the second round and will be playing their fifth home game in six weeks on Saturday night. Chris Streveler threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns while running for over 100 more with a score. Streveler is committed to the University of Minnesota and has been very consistent all season long for the Hurricanes, who average 41 points a game and give up just over ten points per game.
These two teams know each other in and out and know exactly what each team is going to want to do in this quarterfinal. Montini has knocked out Marian Central the past three years on their way to the state title. This is a different Marian Central team in 2012 and Streveler is the key to that. I think Marian will be able to break their streak of losses to the Broncos. I’ll take Marian Central 35-20.
