We are nearing the end of the 2012 high school football season as the semifinal round arrives this weekend. In one semifinal, the 11-1 Aurora Christian Eagles face the 12-0 Sterling Newman Central Comets on Saturday at 2 p.m. while in the other semifinal, the 11-1 Greenville Comets go on the road to face the 11-1 Tolono Unity Rockets Saturday at 1 p.m.
Aurora Christian pounded Winnebago 49-14 in the quarterfinals while Sterling Newman squeezed past Wilmington 28-26 to stay undefeated for the season. This game will be played at Sterling High School.
Aurora Christian has scored 549 points while giving up only 143 points in 12 games while Sterling Newman has given up just 119 points while scoring 362 points. The high-powered Eagles offense is going to be just too much for the Comets in trying to slow down the defending state champion.
I’ll go with Aurora Christian 35-26.
In the second semifinal, Greenville escaped with a 49-38 win over Carterville last week while Tolono Unity won a low-scoring game with a 10-7 win over Williamsville. This is a big game for both of these teams, who lost in the semifinals last season.
Greenville and Tolono Unity are both on a nine-game winning streak coming into this game. This has the definite potential to become a high-scoring game where both teams top the 40-point mark. This is probably the hardest game I’ve picked all postseason but I will take the home team here. I’ll take Tolono Unity 42-41.
If Aurora Christian and Tolono Unity do matchup for the state champion, there is no doubt that the 100-point mark will be in jeopardy for the two teams combined.
