It is getting late in November which means the semifinals have arrived in Illinois High School Football in Class 7A. The first semifinal has the 10-2 Lake Zurich Bears on the road to face the 12-0 Glenbard West Hilltoppers at Glenbard South on Saturday at 1 p.m. The other semifinal has the 12-0 Lincoln-Way East Griffins at the 11-1 Benet Academy Redwings Saturday at 6 p.m.
Lake Zurich has allowed just 12 points in the postseason including a 21-6 win over Rockford Boylan last week. Glenbard West played in a muddy mess and came away with a 3-0 win over Wheaton North. This game was moved to Glenbard South because of how bad the Glenbard West field was after last week. These are both great defensive teams with Glenbard West giving up just 96 points this year while Lake Zurich has only allowed 63 points. I think that points will be at a premium and Lake Zurich will find just enough to score the win. I’ll take Lake Zurich 10-3.
The other semifinal has Lincoln-Way East, who hammered Edwardsville 40-10 last week to advance while Benet Academy got past Downers Grove North 26-24 to win their ninth straight game. It has been a great run for Benet, who went 1-8 last season and have given up just 136 points this year. Lincoln-Way East has only given up 125 points themselves for the season but both of these teams can score in bunches, which is how I see this game going. In a high-scoring game, I favor Benet Academy at home to win this. I’ll take Benet Academy 38-34.
A Lake Zurich-Benet Academy title game would be a treat to see for sure so I really hope the fans along with myself actually get to see it.
